The Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations, Kenneth Wain has emphasised that any initiative to collect money from the public is regulated by the Public Collections Act and Voluntary Organisations Act, 2007.

However, all voluntary organisations, whether foundations, associations, trusts or temporary organisations, which are enrolled with the Commissioner are permitted to make public collections without any further authorisations.

It is an offence for any voluntary organisation to make public collections if it is not enrolled with the Commissioner unless permission is obtained from the Commissioner of Police.

Such an offence is punishable by a fine of not less than €116.50 (Lm50) but not more than €2,330 (Lm1,000) or to a term of imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months, or to both fine and imprisonment.

The Commissioner is currently accepting applications for enrolment of voluntary organisations.

Any organisation wishing to enrol as a voluntary organisation may apply to the Commissioner's office at Block C, Beltissebħ, Floriana or visit www.mfss.gov.mt.
