Showtime previews the Isle of MTV concert this month

As we hinted in May's MTA page, Spanish-born superstar Enrique Iglesias returns to Malta this month to head up the bands engaged to appear on the Floriana Fossos in the Isle of MTV concert. Sr Iglesias, who made such a huge impact at last year's MTV concert, has sold over 40 million albums to date and is set to become the most successful artist in the history of popular music.

The MTV mega-gig will take place on June 25 in collaboration with G 7 and the Malta Tourism Authority, who are anticipating a record turnout on the granaries. Completing the impressive line-up at the concert will be the UK band The Kooks, US alternative rock band N*E*R*D, One Republic and Lady GaGa.

The Kooks are an interesting outfit. British born but achieving mega-success in the US, before also making it in their home country. Their 2006 album Inside In/Inside Out sold more than two million copies and spawned no less than six hit singles. Their new album Konk was released two months ago and is already riding high in the album charts.

Just one album ahead of The Kooks are N*E*R*D - pronounced en - ee - ar - dee - (which apparently stands for No-one Ever Really Dies), who release their third album Seeing Sounds this month. The band is led by iconic front man Pharrell Williams, who is set to be the biggest thing in rock in the very near future. N*E*R*D have been in existence since 2001, which means they have enjoyed quite a protracted shelf life by rock band standards. Also booked to appear will be arguably the hottest outfit of them all One Republic. They scored a huge hit with their first single Apologise, which sold some six million legal downloads and stayed in the top 40 charts for two months. They

followed this up with Stop and Stare, which also topped the charts around the world. This fate seems to be on the cards for their latest single Say (All I need).

Lady GaGa has a slightly lower profile - at present - than these other mega stars, but she is catching up fast. Although still very young - 22, she has served her time in the clubs on New York's Lower East Side and is just breaking out into the mainstream. She is a totally unique talent who is destined to go far.

The Isle of MTV Malta event will round off the first-ever Malta Music Week, hosted by Malta in celebration of the Isle of MTV. The week, starting on June 20, will feature local and foreign bands and DJs in some of Malta and Gozo's principle venues.

This month is an extremely busy one for the MTA and also includes their sponsorship of two major beauty contests. Miss World Bikini Model International and Miss European Tourism Beauty. Both will both take place at the Dragonara Casino on June 24.
