Mark Hughes was confirmed as Manchester City's new manager on Wednesday after quitting their Premier League rivals Blackburn Rovers.

City's Web site (www.mcfc.co.uk) said that Hughes, who has signed a three-year contract, had agreed to join after meeting the club's executive chairman Garry Cook on Tuesday.

Hughes, whose clubs as a player included Manchester United and Barcelona and who won 72 caps for Wales, replaces Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson, who left after one season by mutual consent on Monday. City agreed a compensation package with Blackburn, where Hughes had been in charge for four years, on Tuesday.
