Former MLP leader Alfred Sant has informed President Eddie Fenech Adami that he will resign as Leader of the Opposition effective from 6.30 p.m. tomorrow.

Dr Fenech Adami wrote to Dr Sant today telling him he would proceed with the appointment of a new Leader of the Opposition tomorrow. He thanked him for his service to the country.

Dr Sant's resignation will come into effect at the same time as Labour Party delegates start to vote to elect a new leader. However, should no MP be elected to the top party post, it is expected that Charles Mangion will be appointed leader of the opposition.

Should the new leader not be an MP, and should he not immediately be co-opted to parliament, it is expected that the position of Leader of the Opposition will then be transferred to the new MLP deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, who is to be elected on June 12.

Dr Sant was appointed Leader of the Opposition soon after his election to head the MLP in 1992.
