Mater Dei Hospital cost €67.6m in six months
Spending at Mater Dei reached €67,611,523 in the six months between November and April, according to information given in Parliament this evening.
Social Policy Minister John Dalli said that expenditure on a cash basis issued by the Departmental Accounting System amounted to €50,515,898, along with a further €17,095,625 spent on medical and pharmaceutical materials.
Answering another question by Mr Parnis, the minister said the government pays the annual sum of €2.25 million, excluding VAT, for security at Mater Dei Hospital. The sum is paid to a contracted private company.

Incredible but I'm not surprised. Let's just take a look to the 2 million Euros paid for security.
Well, if we employ 100 full time securities and pay them 200 euros each per week, this would amount to 20,000 euros a week. Multiplied for 52 weeks we wiill have to pay 1 Million euros approx per year. Private security companies pay round 150 euros per week - I'm being quite fair. Not mentioning and correct me if I'm wrong, as far as I know, it involves only 50 securities to run mater dei!!!
You don't need to be a mathematician to understand and conclude. On security only, we are paying an extraordinary sum. Are we doing the same on other services too? Was the homework and budgeting done professionally?
Well, I think all of us know the answers deep inside.
I just hope to see things done seriously some day.

My oh my. This country is living way beyond its means. We knew it, we know it...... and yet we decide to procrasinate from taking the (tough) decisons that have to be taken.
The final straw will be the anticipated slump in property prices. That's what happens when you have politicians who shy away from the real issues at hand.

Mr Dalli, there seems to be something fishy behind those figures as you quoted figures from the direct accounting system, are we to understand, as Dr Gonzi explained to us on Xarabank that the Water & Electricity bills have been left in the drawer? what about creditors and depreciation? are these not also a cost?
