Generous visitor
On two previous occasions I had appealed through your newspaper for handymen, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers, and so on, to offer two hours' free labour per month to the needs of women and underprivileged families who have been provided with social housing.
This is one of the projects undertaken by Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA ) Malta to resettle unfortunate people in a new life, after having passed through a rough time, usually including a period in a shelter for the homeless or as a result of family disintegration or single parenthood.
Unfortunately we had no response so far from local tradesmen. More recently our club, Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA ) needed to do finishing works at our new National Centre. Providentially, an English gentleman, who was here on a three-month holiday, heard of our predicament and offered to do the job without payment, as his contribution to Maltese society.
Walter Johnson worked practically every day for the last two months in all the above-mentioned trades to bring our centre up to a state when we can soon officially open doors to continue expanding our philanthropic work.
On behalf of the president and executive committee of YWCA Malta, I thank Mr Johnson profoundly for giving up so much of his holiday time to dedicate it to hard work in support to our good cause. We wish him prolonged good health for his inspiring kindness and generosity. You can contact the YWCA on 2758 0982.

It is a great shame that the YWCA asked for donation of time from local craftsman and none were willing. it is a blessing that a visitor to the island was able and willing to do the work needed but locals would not give. what a shame that from all the readers none could be bothered to donate a bit of their time to help others who are trying to help people less fortunate. it is quite embarassing to say the least that it was visitor to the island who donated his time. shame on you! the gentleman came on holiday and ended up working to make up for the lack of volunteers of Malta's own.
