I take my dog every day for its well-deserved walk along the aqueduct leading up to San Anton Gardens.

Lately, I noticed that there are signs all along the road warning that failure to clean up after one's dog is against the law and consequently offenders will be fined.

However, there is not even one dog-litter bin in sight along this same road and as a result a person may be discouraged from picking the litter up, having to carry it around in a plastic bag.

When walking along this road, one can notice that signs have not contributed to any improvement in the situation, as the pavement is still peppered with dog litter.

I always pick up my dog's litter but I would have to walk to a children's playground to find the nearest bin, and for reasons of public hygiene (and considering there will be children playing in the area) I end up having to walk home with the lot - other people would just not bother.

May I suggest that the local council place bins similar to the ones along the Buġibba promenade, which are very practical and also a relief not only for the dog owner but also for pedestrians.

A bin would certainly be an incentive for cleaner pavements; a warning sign, coupled with the Maltese mentality, generally leads to utter disregard of regulations.
