Survey names Muscat and Abela as top favourites
A survey by Xarabank released during yesterday's edition of the show indicates that the majority of the Maltese believe the two contestants who have the greatest chance of becoming leader of the MLP and to lead the party to victory in the next general election are George Abela and Joseph Muscat.
Dr Muscat is perceived to have wider support within the MLP than Dr Abela. On the other hand, Dr Abela is seen to have the best chance of returning the party to government, followed by Dr Muscat.
Dr Muscat seems to enjoy a higher level of support among those who call themselves Labourites and is also in the lead among those respondents who did not want to disclose their political affiliation.
Dr Abela leads in the rest of the categories with a majority of floating voters and Nationalists who think he has the best chance to return the MLP to office.

Dear Sergio i think you should read carefully the report on while labour lost the election to understand the cause of this frenzy. The election for the successor of Dr. F. Adami went smoothly without a hitch because there were no cliques within the party working for their self interests. The top echelon of the party instead of fight each other for position within the party made sure that everything was done in a democratic and left no doubts as to the fairness of the election. Many labourites fear that there will be a repeat of the 2003 election. And i do not blame them.

According to the Xarabank survey "Joseph Muscat registers a higher level of support among those who describe themselves as Labourites (35%) and among floating voters (39.5%). He is followed closely by George Abela in both categories, at 31.3% (Labourites) and at 36% (floating voters). George Abela is leading the other categories: 40% (NA) and 48.5% (Nationalists) followed by Joseph Muscat: 34.3 (NA) and 33.3% (Nationalists)."
This survey, unlike others that preceded it reveals that Joseph Muscat has the highest support amongst floating voters from all the 5 contenders.
Moreover I have my doubts whether 50% of all Nationalist voters in the country will automatically change their vote in favor of MLP if George Abela is elected leader. Let us assume that 10% of them will vote for MLP: that means that George Abela is not as strong as he is perceived to be.
However I still value George Abela as a very strong contender and coupled with Joseph Muscat as leader they would make one hell of a team.

All these surveys are totally useless and misleading since they do not base themselves on the same voters - i.e. the MLP delegates - who shall decide the MLP leadership race.
Indeed, I find them as an annoying - but legitimate - outside influence on the delegates themselves.
I must - furthermore - note that when Dr. Fenech Adami stepped down, I didn't see all this frenzy to predict the next PN leader... Maybe the meetings at Girgenti ensured of this?
