After dragging its feet for years over the issue of interoperabilty of its work group server software with that of (mostly non-EU) rivals as well as the bundling of the Windows Media Player with its operating system, Microsoft seems to have realized that it has to desist from its confrontational attitude towards the EU. Hence, Dr Vassallo's appointment. This after suffering hundreds of millions of euro in fines. The Commission, and especially, Mario Monti and Nellie Kroes, deserve a pat on their back for their efforts. Europeans should realize that Europe has a more effective anti-trust policy than anywhere else in the world, including the U.S. , and this policy safeguards consumers rights as never before. One augurs that Malta too will beef up its policing of antitrust practices through a stronger Office of Fair Trading which hitherto has showed too little autonomy and pro-activity.
