Josie Muscat has been persuaded to stay on as leader of Azzjoni Nazzjonali, the party said this afternoon. Immediately after the party's disappointing showing at the general election Dr Muscat had said he was resigning and stepping out of politics.

But his was the only nomination for party leader when the party assembly met today.

His deputy, Anglu Xuereb, did not contest any post in the party's executive. His place has been assumed by Mary Gauci.

The party also resolved to set up a Vigilance Board to scrutinize any members who wish to contest the election or form part of the Executive Committee.

The new executive of AN is the following:

Leader: Dr Josie Muscat; Deputy leader: Mary Gauci; General Secretary: Malcolm Seychell; President of the executive committee: Antonio Bartolo; Treasurer : Tonio Mercieca; Information Secretary : John Spiteri; members: John Coppini, Karl Littlejohn, Philip Beattie, Anna Mallia.(Ms Mallia is not lawyer Anna Mallia)
