Claudette Abela Baldacchino has been elected vice president of the Socialist Group within the Council of Europe's Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

Mrs Abela Baldacchino was appointed following a unanimous vote by the congress' 117 socialist members. She was nominated by the head of the Maltese delegation and Socialist group member within the congress, Michael Cohen.

Mrs Abela Baldacchino said this was an important appointment not just for the Malta Labour Party (MLP) but also for all of Malta and Gozo's mayors, deputy mayors, councillors and councils.

She promised to work in the best interests of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe.

Mr Cohen said the appointment reflected the confidence of the socialist members in the MLP whose representatives did not just attend the group meetings and plenary sessions but took part actively even in the structures and management of these institutions.

Also elected were Fabio Pellegrini, president; Ludmila Sfirloga, Mehboob Khan, Halvdan Skard and Anatoli Saltykov, vice-presidents; J.C. Frecon, treasurer, and Pihlayassari Marina Sidukliva, auditor.
