A Malta government delegation headed by the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cecilia Attard Pirotta, is to go to Nigeria to have first-hand contact with the Nigerian government and Lonestar, the employers of the Maltese oil worker kidnapped in Nigeria last Friday.

A Foreign Ministry official said Malta needed to send a delegation to Nigeria because of the absence of an embassy or a high level representative.

The worker, George Scerri, 62 of Birkirkara, was kidnapped along with a Pakistani colleague as they were driving to an oil rig, where they work. Contact with him was established on Monday. There have been no reports yet of a ransom having been demanded, although kidnappings are usually made for money.
