An appeal to Labour delegates
On the eve of the election of a new Labour Party leader, I urge my fellow delegates to reflect deeply prior to casting their vote. After the third consecutive electoral defeat, the Labour Party is at a crossroads - our collective vote to select a new leader can give fresh impetus to the MLP and a genuine new beginning or consolidate the status quo with all its consequences. We have a very big responsibility and this time round we should ensure that we do not fail all those party faithful across Malta and Gozo.
Away from the political hype within the party itself and the local media, we as delegates of the MLP should look into our inner selves and with a clear mind decide who of the five contestants deserves to lead the MLP for the coming years and is most capable not only of winning the next general election but also has the ability to organise and restructure the MLP from within. We should not let misconceptions or external interference blur our vision to do what is good for the MLP and the thousands of Labour supporters in Malta and Gozo.
The MLP has just published the report it commissioned to identify the reasons for its third consecutive electoral defeat. The report lists a number of deficiencies within the party and makes a number of recommendations on how it can better prepare itself for future electoral challenges. It is the duty of all MLP delegates to peruse and reflect deeply on the contents of this report. It should be our guiding star to ultimately make the correct decision on June 5.
The MLP is made up of the leadership, the administration, the delegates, the vast number of Labour supporters and all those who look favourably towards social democratic principles. With all these elements working in unison, with determination and an inspirational leader, "yes we can" make this party the soul and spirit of Malta.

@ Ethelbert Schembri. You are a shining example of what a party delegate should be. Be vigilant with your sentiments to encourage your Brothers and Sisters at the conference. Disregard all the trash that the PN is dishing out and bear in mind that the job of a strategist is always to weaken his\her opponent. Gonzipn are not different just more hypocritical that's all.
Labour is already the soul and spirit of Malta, it just needs revitalising and with a new leader on 6 June that will happen fast.

I'm not going to beat around the bush; I'm a nationalist voter and my preference for the Labour Party's top position is G Abela. My interest in who becomes Labour's next leader stems from the fact that he or she is likely to be my/our PM in 2013. I want Malta be in the safest hands possible when the time comes. I find G Abela inspiring, pro-EU, and a man of integrity similar on par to L Gonzi. If many think his age is going to be an issue if he becomes PM in 2013 than consider that the US Presidential nominee J Mccain is 71 and running for one of the world's most powerful positions. I believe that G Abela has got what it takes to re-modernize the Labour Party and attract the thousands of voters - blue and red - that abstained in the last election. Would I consider voting for him? If their policies are sound unlike the last election's policies and are for the best interest of the country and all us Maltese, sure why not!
