Between academic year 2003-04 and May 21, 2008, the number of youths who asked to be exempted from school so that they could go to work was 402, Education Minister Dolores Cristina told Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis in parliament yesterday. The greatest number was 116 in 2003-04. Mrs Cristina said the majority of children not attending school were covered by medical certificates. There were others who did not attend school due to family or social problems.
