Bartolo highlights problems faced by part-timers

The problems faced by part-time workers were discussed during a meeting yesterday between Evarist Bartolo and Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin.

The Labour leadership candidate recalled how during house visits in the run-up to the March 8 general election he came across many families whose income depended on a part-time job.

These workers do not enjoy enough protection, he said, adding he was pleased to note that in his speech at the opening of Parliament, President Eddie Fenech Adami mentioned the government's commitment to protect part-time workers.

UĦM general secretary Gejtu Vella said the union was committed to see part-time workers enjoy pro-rata the conditions enjoyed by full-timers.

Mr Bartolo referred to the rising prices of oil and cereals, which were impacting on the income of families, describing this development as a serious problem.

Mr Vella said the union was working with the government and with employers to find the best solution possible.
