The Bishop of Prato, Mgr Gastone Simoni, has appointed two Maltese canons: Fr Joseph Sultana and Cana Movement founder Mgr Charles G. Vella.

Mgr Simoni presided over a concelebrated Mass at the church of Madonna dell' Ulivo on the occasion of Fr Sultana's golden jubilee. Fr Sultana has spent 40 years as a parish priest in Prato.

Bishop Simoni thanked Fr Sultana for his apostolate and said he considered him to be the founder of the building of the church and parish.

Fr Sultana also celebrated his jubilee at the Balzan parish church last month.

As a sign of gratitude, Fr Sultana was appointed honorary canon of the cathedral chapter of Prato and Mgr Vella, who was present for the occasion, was appointed honorary canon of the cathedral for his work at the diocese of Prato in the pastoral care of families.

The connection started 40 years ago after a visit by Mgr Pietro Fiordelli, the former Bishop of Prato.
