Why no plans for bombed-out site?
What is the mystery that shrouds the rebuilding of our national Opera House? The present bombed eyesore has insulted the Maltese intelligence far too long! All other countries who suffered heavy losses during the last war have had their cities completely rebuilt, and most of them faithfully reconstructed.
Common sense and logic dictates that the outside shell should be the original outstanding and imposing architecture, while inside should be a state-of-the-art and modern development.
Finance should definitely not be an excuse! I have already stated on various occasions that both Britain and Germany would and should look kindly on assisting in this project.

Britain is responsabile because they bombed Malta to hit the british not the
Maltese. The same like britain nowadays bomb kill and maime Iraqi and
Afghanistanis women and children with the excuse of killing terrorists.
britain left destruction and misery everyware and is nothing but a state
terrorist. They left misery and a mess in Malta too and they should pay
for it.

I am not going into the question as to why, or how Malta got involved in World War II, we were a colony and that is that.
A question that many Maltese would like to be answered by Whitehall is; What did actually happen to the Marshall Aid monies donated to Malta? Rumour has it that it was passed to Germany to help re-build their country.

I totally agree with Vincent A. Galea 's views about the rebuilding of the Opera House. However, much as I love Malta I cannot agree with his suggestion that Great Britain should assist in the costs. Surely both Germany and Italy as the aggressors in the 2nd World War should soley be responsible. They after all blew it up! NOT Great Britain, who through the immediate years after the war assisted Malta with some rebuilding costs. It may interest readers to know that the British Government finally finished paying the loans made by the United States for assistance during the war in 2006. The U.S. gave very little for free. We had to rebuild our own cities. My own city centre was entirely blitzed and I don't recall the Germans helping in it's regeneration.
No doubt the European Union would offer some financial support...............so over to you Malta.

I would hope the U.K. & German governments would contribute to this project. In addition I am confident that those of us who remember our family members, and ourselves, serving in Malta, and who love the islands, would be pleased to contribute privately.

This topic has been discussed several times and it is a shame that the Opera House remained in such a state. I was under the impression that we had already received some form of compensation specifically intended for the rebuilding of the Opera House but stand to be corrected. Can someone comment on this please?
