I was saddened to read John Guillaumier's letter entitled 'The Sunday God' (The Sunday Times, May 18). I felt there was more than a little hopelessness there. We are all upset and shocked when disasters happen.

Suffering is something that we all find hard to come to terms with. But to depict God as a sort of magician with a wand ready to stave off our suffering is unrealistic. As a human being, Christ took it upon himself to make God known to us. And God as revealed to us by Christ is anything but uncaring. Christ, too, invited us to walk the way of love - love of God and love of neighbour. Unfortunately, suffering is part of this way. Every serious illness, every death, to mention but two, are personal tragedies we see every day. There are many more if only we care to look.

Are we doing anything to alleviate any suffering we come in contact with? Christ himself felt abandoned by God just before he died. But does Christ's story end with the crucifixion?
