A group of Catholic scouts from Germany were in Gozo for three days, led by Judith Christoph and Fr Harald Volk. They pitched their tents in different localities, including Għammar Hill, chanting hymns to the Virgin Mary.

Maria Matthaei said they came to know about the island after reading a book on the Great Siege of Malta. She said they visited Dingli cliffs, Rabat, Mdina and Naxxar and spent a night in Onejna Bay followed by a visit to St Paul's Bay.

In Gozo they attended Mass at Ta' Pinu sanctuary followed by breakfast in the Ta' Pinu annex.

Ms Matthaei said that unlike other countries "we experienced the richness of Catholic traditions and folklore that the islands have to offer".

She said that there was a special connection with Malta.

"We have the same cross of Malta on our scouting flag which shows that we have the same aim: Scouting to work for a Christian Europe."
