Primary schools hold environmental activities

To celebrate Earth Day, various environmental activities were recently organised at St Benedict's College Kirkop primary school and St Ignatius College's primary in Siġġiewi.

In an Eco School initiative Kirkop primary pupils sang various songs and distributed placards to shops in Kirkop promoting messages on recycling and other environmentally-friendly issues.

The songs suggested simple ways of making 'green' changes, such as saving water, reducing electricity use, disposing waste correctly, and separating, re-using or recycling waste.

Speeches emphasising the importance of the environment were also delivered during the event by Joanna Drake, head of the European Commission Representation in Malta, Kirkop mayor Mario Salerno, school head Jeffrey Caruana and St Benedict College principal Marilyn Sciortino.

Meanwhile, a nature-oriented assembly was held at the Siġġiewi primary as part of its Eco School and Dinja Waħda projects.

The programme featured a speech by a Birdlife representative, who presented gifts and a book about birds for the school library, and another a speech by a pupil expressing appreciation of nature and the environment.

Birdlife's mascot Ħuttafa also went round talking to all the excited pupils, and an environmentally-friendly 'green' witch puppet flying on a broom, also captured the attention of all present.

The programme also included singing, poem recital, dancing and a short play entitled Nibżgħu għall-baħar (Taking Care of the Sea).
