Twenty-seven illegal immigrants - 21 males and six females, including some minors - arrived in Malta yesterday, the police said.

The police went to Għar Lapsi just after 5 a.m. after they were informed by fishermen that a boat with the immigrants on board was approaching the bay.

The Armed Forces of Malta's operations centre at Luqa Barracks was later contacted by the police and a patrol vessel towed the boat to Hay Wharf.

The immigrants were handed over to immigration police for further investigations.
