MLP solidarity with kidnapped Maltese worker

The Labour Party this morning expressed its solidarity with Maltese oil worker George Scerri, kidnapped in NIgeria yesterday. It said it backed Maltese government efforts to secure his release.

The worker, along with a Pakistani colleague, was kidnapped in the Niger Delta in southern Nigeria .

Kidnappings for ransom are common in the oil-producing Niger Delta, where militants have launched a campaign of violence to press for local control of the region's natural resources. More than 200 foreigners have been seized in violence in the region since early 2006. Almost all have been released unharmed.

One would raise the question why he was travelling without military escort.
