It's really sad to see Malta being bombarded daily by illegals. There are people who accuse others of racism if maltese citizens speak about this issue. this is total nonsense. We maltese citizens have a fundamental right to speak on this issue without being accused of being racist. Enough of these illegals. These people are illegals. period. time has come to start addressing this issue more seriously by both parties. this issue is a national issue and needs to be addressed accordingly and that starts from the Prime Minister all the way down with the leader of opposition. Malta cannot continue to take between 1500-2000 illegal immigrants a year. Ask yourselfs one question. What will become of Malta in 25 years time. Remember, these individuals are adults not old people. And what about a secure future for our children. Could the leading maltese politicians please and stop hiding behind their ministers ot other EU politicals. Also, how come the leaders of countries like like Italy and France are addressing the issue of illegals and our Prime MInister is running from this issue.

Malta should adopt the laws just passed by the Berlusconi government.

We must say stop. Ignore UNHCR who clearly have shown us that they don't care for national interest.

Uk as a whole, and major cities in Europe are completely lost because of illegal immigration.

Albert, I`d say that we are not driven into the pockets of Norman Lowell as he only got 90 + votes in the last election. I truly think Mr. Lowell has some good points but again bad ways of delivering the few good points which make the package not worth the taking for the many.
The country has to stand up at this problem and be united against this silent invasion which will, or has already, tipped the balance for us.
A small calculation
Europes area is 10,050,000 km2
Malta`s Area is 390 km2
Ratio Malta:EU 1:25770
So if there are 1Million ILLEGAL immigrants in all of Europe our fair share would be 40.
Europe is too busy using ECJ to attack Malta even with the handling of illegal immigration than to ease our pain in this increasing problem.

When will the country or the EU wake up to this reality. I really do not know.
Joe Gatt (on 24/5/08)
All this shows that the Frontex operation with its current 'rules of engagement' is worse than useless.

The new Italian government is getting tougher. As a result Malta, with its liberal approach, is becoming much more attractive to the illegals -- and to the people smugglers. We risk being inundated this summer.

Our government should remember that it was elected by the Maltese people and that its primary duty is to protect them.

It must act at once by introducing rules even tougher than those of the Italians. It must also impose very severe penalties against those who employ illegals, thereby making big profits from their plight -- and from the invasion of Malta.
Sandro Pace (on 24/5/08)
Is it a serious issue? Some people think otherwise. I think it is. The Italian society think it is. Italian politicians think it is. France think it is. Whining will get you nowhere. Unless this issue is made a political issue, nothing will be done. Politicians understand one thing, the ballot.

There is much more the government can do, and another voice in parliament, would have made sure that they will be done.

No stone should be left unturned to fly back these immigrants to their departing point, which is libya, upon electronic proof that these boats left from there. If Libya does not comply with UNHCR, it is a Libyan - UNHCR matter, not a Maltese one.

UNHCR, afterall, by hindering the tranfer of 400 of immigrants to another European country, is working against the national interest. UNHCR is not recognising that Malta has a problem, and it should simply be ignored.

Alex Ellul (on 24/5/08)
Dear Hector and Albert, I have already commeneted that the euro parliamentarians and the UN do not want to irk the libyans....THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
Hector Farrugia (on 24/5/08)
Where in b... hell is Frontex. What is it doing with some of our money? There are a million waiting in Libya for the cross over. What are the NGOs doing? Where will we put them? God help us if more of them come to Malta or finish in Malta. This is our Number one big problem. What shall we do? Give them a ship to go to Europe or will Frontex do its duty and make them return to Libya? Let's stop this tsunami once and for all.
ALBERT FENECH (on 24/5/08)
Our Government's and Opposition's total suppine inaction over this VERY, VERY serious matter is driving the Maltese population into the pockets of Norman Lowell. This country is already in an enormous mess. How much longer are we supposed to stand-by and enable our politicians to "let them get on with it"?

Is everybody from the neck upwards in this country dead and buried?
