Labour wants action plan on cost of living

The Labour Party said yesterday it expected the government to propose an action plan at the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development meeting today to give families a new lease of life in the face of the rising cost of living.

Expressing satisfaction at the fact that a meeting had been called to discuss the issue, the MLP noted that Malta had the fifth highest cost of living rate increase among eurozone countries. It said the price of food, medicine and educational materials had risen by 1.5 times more than they had in the eurozone over the past month and the cost of clothes at a rate four times higher.

The MLP understood that the international cost of cereals, food and oil would have an impact on Malta but these circumstances had already existed in February when the PN drew up and presented its electoral manifesto for the last general election.

So during the MCESD meeting, the minister should show how his government was to start implementing its promises, which included fighting the cost of living, the MLP said.
