Over the last few weeks there have been several letters in the newspapers about stray dogs in localities such as Pembroke, Swieqi and Ta' l-Ibraġ.

The writers have claimed that these dogs are very dangerous as they have attacked animals and persons and that as a result they are now living in fear.

Stray dogs are the result of irresponsible persons who abandon the dogs when they begin to consider them as a burden.

It is such behaviour that is the source of the problem as these dogs have then to find food and shelter.

If someone witnesses the abandonment or abuse of a dog, it should be reported. Often, these animals are also maltreated; it is not rare to see dogs being beaten or poisoned.

The authorities should also make more of an effort to see to it that laws regarding cruelty to animals are enforced.

There is also the need for more financial support, and other assistance, to homes taking care of animals found abandoned on our streets. I would like to express my appreciation to all those persons who voluntarily feed and give some of their attention to these dogs; and also to those who neuter them so as to reduce the number of stray dogs experiencing a harsh life.
