Cyprus Division One team AEK Larnaca are showing interest in signing Sebastian Monesterolo and have reportedly agreed a two-year contract with the Argentine striker whose contract with Valletta expires at the end of this month.
Monesterolo, 25, was top scorer of the 2007/08 season with 19 goals. He joined Valletta last summer after an unsuccessful spell in Kuwait to help the Citizens chalk up their first championship since 2001.
AEK Larnaca carried a prominent news item on their website saying that they had already reached an agreement with Monesterolo for the next two years. However, Monesterolo yesterday denied he had signed a contract but told The Times that he was leaving for Cyprus soon to meet up with his agent.
Larnaca finished fourth in the final league standings in the Cypriot top flight which came to a close recently. Anorthosis Famagusta won the national championship with 72 points from 32 matches. Larnaca totalled 50 points.
An informed source yesterday told The Times that Valletta had no offer for Monesterolo. A few months back an English club made initial queries on the striker but no deals were agreed and the interest died down.
