Manchester United won theChampions League by beating Chelsea on penalties after abreathless all-English final had finished 1-1 after extra timeon Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who had put United in front with a26th-minute header, missed in the shootout but Chelsea's JohnTerry hit the post with his spot kick when the title was at hismercy.

United's 37-year-old goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar then savedfrom Nicolas Anelka to give United Europe's top prize for thethird time.

After Ronaldo's opening goal both goalkeepers made greatsaves before Frank Lampard equalised from close range infirst-half injury time.

Chelsea were much the stronger side in the second half, withDidier Drogba hitting a post 12 minutes from time, but theIvorian striker's day ended in disgrace as he was sent off justbefore the end of extra time.
