Sixth corpse found at sea

Another corpse was recovered from the sea 50 nautical miles southwest off Malta yesterday morning.

It was the sixth body to be found in Maltese waters over recent days.

The Armed Forces of Malta said that at about 6.15 a.m. the Maritime Rescue co-ordination centre (MRCC) in Rome informed the AFM's operations centre at Luqa Barracks that an Italian patrol boat of the Capitaneria di Porto had sighted a corpse. The Italian patrol boat recovered the corpse and sailed towards Malta for a mid-sea rendezvous with an AFM Maritime Squadron SAR-launch - Melita-2 - to transfer the corpse and bring it to Malta.

Two corpse and 10 life jackets were found at sea in two positions on Tuesday morning, pointing to another possible tragedy at sea involving illegal immigrants crossing from the African coast to lower Europe.

Last week, 49 migrants perished in the sea off the Tunisian coast.
