Energy consumption up 19% since 2000

The importation of fossil fuels increased by 17 percent between 2000 and 2007 but the fuel mix is becoming cleaner according to information published today by the National Statistics Office.

Around 60 percent of fuel oils are used for the production of electricity while 34 percent (including diesel, gas oil, unleaded and jet fuel) is used for public and private transportation.

Between 2000 and 2006 Malta's gross energy consumption increased by 19 percent, with the domestic sector absorbing around 36 percent , the commercial sector, 32 percent and the industrial sector, 30 percent.

The figures show that total imports of fossil fuels were 828,569 tonnes in 2000 and 973,427 tonnes last year. However the increases have not been uniform. The importation of low sulphur diesel has declined from 111,767 tonnes in 2011 to 99,188 tonnes last year, imports of unleaded fuel have climbed to 99,188 tonnes from just 27,220 tonnes in 2000 and importation of kerosene has slumped to 1,413 tonnes from 9,677 in 2000.

Malta no longer imports Premium and imports less Jet A-1 fuel but there has been a strong increase in the importation of fuel oil, light heating oil and LPG.

A Bezzina (on 22/5/08)
The decline in low sulphur fuel by 12500 tons (2000 to 2007) has been practically taken up by a corresponding amount of light heating oil. The slump in kerosene sales shows to what extent abuse of this fuel was being made, LHO has now taken over this illegal, dirty application. The remaining 1413 tons are being used fo legitimate domestic heating applications.
