Charged with theft

A 31-year-old man from Cospicua yesterday pleaded not guilty to stealing two coils of cable used for welding from Malta Shipyards on Sunday evening.

Gilbert Agius, a plasterer, pleaded not guilty to stealing the cable worth under €1,165 (Lm500).

Appearing for Mr Agius, lawyer Joseph Mifsud told the court that his client needs the help of a probation officer and also wants to start a residential drug rehabilitation programme to help him kick the habit.

The court is in the position to save his client's life.

Police Inspector Jesmond Borg, prosecuting, told the court that a strong deterrent is needed to keep Mr Agius from finding drugs readily available. He advised that the accused be placed under house arrest.

Magistrate Edwina Grima subsequently granted Mr Agius bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €2,000 (Lm858.36). She also ordered him not to leave his residence.
