Busy days at RMGC as players vie for Order of Merit points

These last few weeks at the Royal Malta Golf Club (RMGC) have been very active.

The 'Homes of Quality' tournament was played over four days. The event is held annually and is a handicap competition for both men and women with the first prize being a holiday in Tuscany.

Joanna Azzopardi was the clear winner with 77 Stableford points - this being the aggregate of two days. The other podium winners were Monica Borain (74) and Maike Beekman (71).

Ruud Critien (76) and Peter Satariano (74) were the top golfers in the men's competition. Frank Salt presented the prizes.

The Fenston Cup came to a close a few weeks ago. This tournament has very much been a feature of the RMGC since 1995.

It is a mixed competition, one of the few at the club, and around 100 members took part in six teams each sponsored by a local organisation. These were: Pedigree (Mario Balzan Demajo), Cassar and Cooper (Maureen Borg), Sapori (Nigel Hall), Playmobil (Hans Antoni), Beck Graphics (William Beck) and the Golf Shop (Felicity Dix).

Cassar and Cooper were the winners followed closely by Playmobil and the Golf Shop. The notable scorers were Andy Borg, Maureen Borg, Stephen Borg, Ken Waddington, William Beck and Ray Mountford. They all scored an average of 34 points, or better, per round over six rounds.

Another monthly feature at the club is the Monthly Medal.

Division One: Winner - Ken Waddington (h/cap 10); 2. Truman Addison (7); 3. Alfred Zammit (9).

Division Two: Winner - Joe Tabone (h/cap 14); 2. John Fletcher (15); 3. Ray Mountford (13).

Division Three: Winner - Sam Wyatt (h/cap 19); 2. John Schell (19); 3. John Rizzo Naudi (23).

Most of these golfers have since had their handicaps adjusted to reflect their improved play.

The Order of Merit final results will be closed in a month but, at present, Andy Borg is first followed by Nicky Beck and Peter Satariano.

These scores are a reflection of the individual's performance in all competitions since September last year. It is important for all golfers because their position within the Order of Merit decides who plays for Malta vs The Rest competition, always a thrilling match played according to the Ryder Cup format.
