A 62-year-old Englishman yesterday "regrettably" admitted to stealing a Rolex wrist watch worth over €2,239 (Lm1,000) and a Motorola mobile phone from the airport.
Peter Enda Keady, from Mellieħa, admitted to stealing the watch and the phone from Malta International Airport on Sunday evening.
Appearing for Mr Keady, lawyer Mark Busutill told the court that his client "regrettably" pleaded guilty to the charges given that the accused had taken the items by mistake.
Prosecuting Police Inspector Jason Agius said that Mr Keady was captured by CCTV cameras taking the items.
Magistrate Doreen Clarke took into consideration the fact that the items had been returned and that it was Mr Keady's first offence. He was subsequently given an 18 month jail term suspended for two years.
