Enrique Iglesias back for MTV concert in June

Heartthrob singer Enrique Iglesias, who wowed the crowd at the Isle of MTV concert last year, will be making a welcome return to the island to perform at the upcoming June 25 show.

His track Can You Hear Me? is the official song of UEFA Euro 2008, and the Spanish star is scheduled to perform live at the final in Vienna on June 29. The 33-year-old, who has had hits on every continent with songs such as Rhythm Divine, Be With You, Hero, Escape, Do You Know? and Tired of Being Sorry, will make his appearance in the 10-minute closing ceremony at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion.

But before that, the Madrid-born, Miami-based singer, who has sold 40 million albums in little over a decade, will perform on The Granaries in Floriana. He had received rave reviews at the concert last year and has been quoted as saying that Isle of MTV was a "fabulous event and I'm looking forward to sharing my music with MTV's viewers and with Malta".

MTV's Isle of MTV Malta Special site, complete with a map of the islands in the background and a gallery of colourful images of last year's concert, also lists The Kooks, N.E.R.D. and Lady GaGa, apart from One Republic, in the "stunning" line-up of international artistes.

The Kooks' 2006 Inside In/Inside Out was a mega hit, selling some two million copies worldwide, spawning massive singles like She Moves in Her Own Way, You Don't Love Me and Naïve. The band returned this year with their new single Always Where I Need To Be and their second album Konk, which was released last month.

N.E.R.D. are releasing their third album, Seeing Sounds, in June, while Lady GaGa's "wild, theatrical and often tongue-in-cheek shock art performances" are likely to take what was a 50,000-strong crowd last June by storm. At just 22, she made a name for herself in New York with the infectious, dance-pop, party song Beautiful, Dirty, Rich.

One Republic is best known for its track Apologise, which has been blasting the radio waves and can soon be heard live.

The MTV site describes Malta as the "stunning gem of the Mediterranean" and warns that in the days leading to the concert, the whole island will be celebrating with the Malta Tourism Authority during the Malta Music Week.

"So wherever you go, there'll be plenty of action across the island," the vibrant site says.

A competition is offering a VIP trip to the festival for two and the site also includes a link to Visit Malta, the island's official tourism site - in keeping with the MTA's aim to promote the island among youths and to use such high-profile, international events to attract tourists. The idea is that they factor in these events when planning their trip to Malta.
