Woman lands in court after reporting theft

A Chinese woman who called at Sliema police station to report a theft ended up in court after the police realised that she had overstayed and forged immigration documents.

Chi Hua, 35, admitted the charge and apologised for her actions.

Police Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri, prosecuting, told the Magistrates' Court this morning that the accused had cooperated with the police but she needed to learn not to take the law into her own hands.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke sentenced the accused to 16 months in prison suspended for a year.

She is leaving the country.

The report says...suspended for a year. This is what is known as the suspended sentence. She is still liable to get 16 months imprisonment if she commits another crime punishable with imprisonment. In this case, she is free to leave.
