The GWU said this afternoon that it had no option but to order industrial action at Air Malta after the airline admitted violating the existing collective agreement.
The issue is over the filling of vacancies.
The union in a statement yesterday had insisted that workers who had been doing work of a higher grade for more than a year should be promoted, in line with the collective agreement.
Air Malta, in a reaction, said said that the practice of direct promotion via a period of substitution to a higher grade was inherently an unjust one, and it did not want to follow this practice.
The GWU in a statement today said the collective agreement was still in force and could not be unilaterally changed by the airline.
Therefore, the union said, it had no choice but to order industrial action. It did not say what the actions would be
