MLP international secretary Joe Mifsud today launched his bid to become deputy leader (party affairs), a post currently held by Michael Falzon, who is now a candidate for the leadership
Dr Mifsud, 40, said that if elected, he would work for unity within the party and develop a number of structures to improve coordination and policy making.
He said he would work for party membership to rise by 5 percent every year and he would seek the appointment of a party communications director, one of whose roles would be responsibiity for the party media.
Dr Mifsud said he would like the MLP to have a National Policy Forum bringing together different sectors of society to discuss particular policy issues. He would also like to see a grouping of Labour local committee members and councillors and a forum for the self-employed and small SMEs.
He said he would encourage party candidates to call on 2,000 households over a five-year period so that the party could have a clear view of what the people were feeling.
The party should also be holding targeted campaigns on issues such as the people’s rights, inter-cultural relations, environment protection and student issues.
On fund raising, Dr Mifsud said that while the party should continue to receive small donations from a large number of people, it should also consider business ventures with the private sector.
