Joseph Borg, president of ACT, the association against copyright theft, has welcomed a recent court judgment where a monti stall owner was fined €10,000 for selling copied DVDs.

“This was the first time that such a high fine, which is close to the maximum allowed by law, had been given.... These sentences should serve as a warning to everyone dealing in pirated material,” Mr Borg said.

The stall owner had been arraigned in court by the police economic crimes unit after his stall was raided a few weeks ago.

A court last year also handed down the first prison sentence for dealing in pirated DVDs.
