The editorial Slip,Slop And Slap To Fight Skin Cancer (May 12) made very interesting reading.

It is very well to encourage everyone to take care and not expose oneself unnecessarily to the sun's harmful rays.

Year after year I have noticed how expensive a good sunscreen is. When I asked why this was so, the local chemist told me that these products are not VAT free and are considered a cosmetic item.

The authorities concerned should keep in mind the high cost of treating people diagnosed with skin melanoma and remove VAT on sunscreen products so that these will become more accessible to everyone and can be used liberally.
