MLP leadership hopeful Joseph Muscat today had a meeting with representatives of some 40 non-governmental organisations.

His office said they discussed how the NGOs would like to see the MLP in the future.

Dr Muscat said that a Labour Party under his leadership would be an integral part of civil society and would take an effective role in open and constructive discussion with all its components.

He said he was proposing the creation of a Unit for Social Dialogue within the party which would be the channel for ongoing communications between the party and NGOs.

NGOs would also be invited to participate in meetings of an Ideas Forum which would discuss specific themes as the MLP considered its policies.

He also promised that should it be in government, the MLP would give a voice to civil society and decisions would not be imposed but would stem from the NGOs themselves.
