Obituary

FIRTH BERNARD. On May 12, JOHN, widower of Jenifer, aged 78, passed away suddenly at home. He leaves to mourn his loss his son Roger, his daughter Susan, his brother Sylvester and his wife Josephine, his sister Jackie and her husband John, his grandsons Aidan and Kieran, and friends and family in Malta and the UK.
Mass praesente cadavere will be said tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St Paul's Anglican pro-Cathedral, Valletta, followed by burial at sea. Flowers or donations to cancer charities at one's discretion would be appreciated.
The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.
Lord, grant him eternal rest.

MESCE officials

Carmel Borg, former dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta, and Peter Mayo were elected secretary general and president respectively of the Mediterranean Society of Comparative Education (MESCE). The new executive committee was announced during the Third International MESCE Conference held in Malta this week.

Daily flights to Durban

Following the successful start of operations in Cape Town, Emirates will advance its presence in South Africa with the introduction of daily flights to Durban, effective December 1, the airline said.

Emirates will serve Durban with an Airbus A330-200 aircraft offering 27 business class and 251 economy class seats. The addition brings Emirates frequencies to South Africa to 35 flights per week. Emirates flies five times weekly from Dubai to Malta via Larnaca in Cyprus.

Centenary Concert

The Salesian Community held the Centenary Concert at their theatre in Sliema to mark the 100th anniversary of the Salesian Theatre and Oratory. Taking part in the event was the Amadeus Chamber Choir and Orchestra under the direction of Brian Cefai. Among the speakers was President Emeritus Guido de Marco.

Treasure hunt

A car treasure hunt will be held on May 22 at Nadur starting at 10 a.m. in aid of the Welfare Fund of the Royal British Legion (Gozo sub-Branch). For further details one can contact the chairman, Denis Coleman, on 2756 5869. The fund assists all ex-service members and their families in times of need.

Flute and guitar recital
