Labour leader contestant George Abela yesterday pledged that, should he be elected party leader, he would ensure full support for Malta Dairy Products (MDP) Ltd that works hard to provide the country with fresh and genuine products.

Speaking during a visit to the company's Ħamrun plant, Dr Abela noted that 70 per cent of MDP's products were made from local produce. MDP did not fear competition and managed to maintain both good quality and its market share.

MDP financial manager Martin Grech explained that, apart from facing the natural disadvantages brought about by Malta's small size and economies of scale, the company was also facing the tough challenges brought about by the rising prices in fuel and cereal.

It had managed to keep prices stable over the years but, last month, had to increase them to cover costs, remain competitive and ensure efficiency and good quality.
