Pavements are made for walking on

I agree with Joe Camilleri who wrote about the awnings/canopies that are occupying the pavements in Sliema (Mepa Application Should Be Resubmitted, May 6). They should all be removed as soon as possible before a tragic accident occurs and that means all, not just those belonging to three restaurants. Pushchairs and wheelchairs are being forced to use the busy road to accommodate the coffee shops that are occupying the public areas.

We also have to suffer all the noise that customers make to show that they're having a coffee or a glass of wine.

On such matters, the Sliema local council should put up signs to warn clients that the area is a residential one, like other councils do.

Apart from all this, looking at them from the opposite pavement, it is evident what an eyesore these plastic and canvas canopies are creating.

I appeal to Mepa to do its duty and remove anything that is illegal so as to let the people enjoy their walks with their children.

Your are right, Mr Borg. Pavements are really, essentially, and simply meant for walking on. It seems, however, that for some of us they are meant to MAKE MONEY ON, at the discomfort of, and with total disregard for, pedestrians!
