Obituary
FIRTH BERNARD. On May 12, JOHN, widower of Jenifer, aged 78, passed away suddenly at home. He leaves to mourn his loss his son Roger, his daughter Susan, his brother Sylvester and his wife Josephine, his sister Jackie and her husband John, his grandsons Aidan and Kieran, and friends and family in Malta and the UK.
Mass praesente cadavere will be said on May 17 at 10 a.m. at St Paul's Anglican pro-Cathedral, Valletta, followed by burial at sea. Flowers or donations to cancer charities at one's discretion would be appreciated. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

SANDSTROM, JANE, on May 9, passed on following a brave fight against cancer. Beloved wife of Torsten. Survived by her children Vibeke, Maura, Megan and Christopher, her daughter-in-law Kristi, her grandchildren Pablo, Dan, Kyle, Kelsey, Natalia, Matilda and Isabel and her special carer, Jocelyn.

First Aid courses
St John Ambulance is running courses in First Aid in Maltese and English. Courses in Maltese will start on June 9 at 6.30 p.m. running twice a week every Monday and Wednesday. Another course started on May 10 running twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday. A course in English started on May 10 running twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday.

Fund raising dinner
The Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce recently held its annual fund raising dinner for 204 guests at Villa Arrigo in Naxxar.
The society's council organises this annual event in aid of the Special Projects Programme, an initiative of the council of the society to help talented art, crafts and music students. Last year 22 students were awarded a three-month scholarship under this programme. This year more students will be receiving a similar scholarship.
History of Malta earthquakes
The Malta Group of Professional Engineering Institutions will be presenting a talk by Pauline Galea, a lecturer at the University of Malta's Physics Department, on the history of earthquakes in Malta since 1500.
The presentation will also tackle the current seismic risks and estimation of return periods for various intensities.
The public, especially persons involved in the technical fields, is invited to attend. The presentation will take place at the Corinthia San Ġorġ Hotel, St Julians today at 6.15 p.m.
Tea, coffee, sandwiches and cake will be served at 5.45 p.m.
Filming at Marsaxlokk
Due to filming, access to Delimara Road (Tal-Ballut site), Marsaxlokk, will be controlled from Monday at 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 28. The Malta Transport Authority said it regrets any inconvenience.
Adoration
Adoration and Mass will be held at St Francis church in Msida Street, Birkirkara, on May 20 from 8 to 10 p.m. Everyone is invited.
Student art
Artist Matthew Cassar and his students will be holding an art exhibition entitled Ġmiel ir-Rabat. Sixteen art students will take part with 50 artworks developed over the past 12 months.
The exhibition will run from May 30 to June 20 at Wignacourt Museum in Rabat. The public is invited to visit Mondays to Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Customer Relations training
The Department for Local Government in collaboration with the Staff Development Organisation within the Office of the Prime Minister recently held a training programme for local council employees on improving customer relations.
The programme was available to all local councils and the participation rate was 66 employees from 35 local councils in Malta and 16 from nine local councils in Gozo, the department said.
Gospel concert
The Maltese choir EnKor will give a gospel concert entitled Get On Board! at Sir Temi Zammit Hall, University of Malta, Tal-Qroqq on June 7 at 8 p.m. to mark its fifth anniversary.
Founded and directed by Johanna van Lent-Singels, the choir consists of 40 singers and seven musicians who perform a varied selection of classical and spiritual pieces and original works by Maltese composers. EnKor's favourite style is gospel.
EnKor regularly takes part in Masses, concerts, charity marathons and TV and radio events.

Fund-raiser at Dar il-Kaptan
There will be an open day at the Mtarfa respite centre Dar il-Kaptan on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Activities will include Mass, car wash, tombola, music, a car boot sale and food apart from the sale of linen, cakes, toys, cakes, plants and books.
Charity ride
A charity ride will be held on Sunday by the Rebel Riders Brotherhood in aid of Land (living ability not disability) which caters for persons with physical disabilities. The bikers will meet at the Luxol Grounds, St Andrews at 9.30 a.m. from where the charity ride will start at 10.30 a.m. The ride will end at 2.30 p.m. at Paceville.
Independence Song Contest
A total of 123 songs were submitted for the 2008 Independence Song Contest to be held at the Floriana Granaries on September 19.
Thirty-seven of these were submitted in the New Talent Category while 86 were in the Festival Category.
Two juries will be listening to the songs next Saturday to choose the finalists.
