HSBC tests photovoltaic system at Attard branch

HSBC Malta has commissioned a pilot project with a photovoltaic system at its new branch in Attard to reduce its carbon footprint. The system is expected to improve energy-efficiency by 20 to 30 per cent. The project is part of the HSBC Global Environmental Efficiency Programme.

It has been tailor-made in close collaboration with the University of Malta, which will be monitoring the system’s performance and derive important data according to different parameters, such as weather conditions and panels direction.

The system is the largest of its kind in Malta to be connected to the national electricity grid.

It is estimated that the system will generate an average of 4,200 kWh per annum, enough to power the 24-hour Express Banking Lobby at the Attard branch, making this service carbon neutral, and offsetting 3.7 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.

“HSBC believes in its responsibility to contribute in a tangible manner towards the reversal of climate change,” said Sally Robson, HSBC’s Chief Operating Officer. “HSBC Malta works in the community and works with its staff to minimise and compensate environmental impact. Each action, each individual, is essential to reach this goal.”

“The Bank is investing heavily in its buildings to minimise energy use. This project in renewables will act as a pilot for other projects to follow, soon,” said Mrs Robson.

I congratulate HSBC on their initiative. May I make one small suggestion which will also help them reduce further their carbon footprint? Now that summer is fast approaching could HSBC ensure that air conditioners are not set at too low a temperature? I have often found HSBC branches too cool for comfort in summer.
