Birkirkara's Youth Nursery have just reached a twinning agreement with Italian Serie A club Atalanta BC.
The Atalanta youth sector is widely regarded among the best in Italy as, along the years, several renowned players have come through the Serie A club's nursery.
Birkirkara's Youth Nursery, this year celebrating its 25th anniversary, have a long-standing relationship with Atalanta. Late last month, Birkirkara's Under-14 team enjoyed an eventful trip to Bergamo.
The squad, led by coach Franco Agius, played a friendly match against an Atalanta youth selection, led by coach Mauro Fumagalli.
Although the Birkirkara players were a year older than those in the Atalanta team, they still found the going tough. Atalanta edged Birkirkara 2-1, turning defeat into victory in the final seven minutes.
During their stay in Bergamo, the Birkirkara contingent, headed by chairman Henry Bray, also had the opportunity to watch the Serie A match between Atalanta and Juventus at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d' Italia.
The Birkirkara youngsters played a second friendly match against Pontirolo, which ended goalless, were shown around Atalanta's headquarters and also visited Serie B club AlbinoLeffe where they met coach Elio Gustinetti, director general Sandro Turotti, captain Ivan Del Prato and defender Gabriele Perico.
