Morena asks for prayers as she heads for Belgrade

Gozitan singer Morena has left Malta for Belgrade carrying Malta’s hopes for Eurovision Song Contest success.

Her first big test will be in the semi-final on May 22, which will decide whether she will interpret Vodka in the final night two days later.

Morena has just had two days of marathon rehearsals with four Swedish male dancers who came to Malta for the purpose.

She looked anxious as she waited at the airport terminal earlier today, but chatted with a group of fans who turned up to wish her well. She asked them to pray for her. She also signed autographs for a number of Germans.

Morena is accompanied by her dancers, members of her family and a Maltasong delegation led by the chairman Robert Abela.

@Saviour Sam Agius
You may want to read more carefully the comment by Tanja Cilia before making your own assumption.
C.R. Taliana (on 15/5/08)
DCG said "For heaven's sake, how pathetic." When are you going to write anything about anyone that is not negative? So you don't agree with her? Fair enough but that does not make her pathetic.

By the way thanks to your article of last year against women who decide to breastfeed their babies (insults galore obviously DCG style) I stopped reading the newspaper you write for. Like me so many others who you so pathetically insulted with your so called articles.
I think that timesofmalta.com should refrain from showing too many of your comments here unless they want to end up like the online newspaper you write for at present.

I didn't know one could win with prayers. I thought one needed votes!
J Abela (on 15/5/08)
@DCG.
The girl just asked for prayers. Give her a break. Is it so pathetic to pray nowadays?

I loathe the ESC and am not a fan of her song, but come on, it's her big break.

I think it's more pathetic to 'F' people off in mummy's presence just to show what a big boy we are .... so don't be such a wet blanket, and stop throwing stones given the precarious state of your glasshouse!
Mark Galea (on 15/5/08)
Dear Lord, thanks for all the blessings you give. Please give special help to all those faced with hardship, hunger, suffering in all countries and during all times. Please help our youths in this stressful time of exams. Please let Morena do the best she can on that day, and bring a smile, and unity to all of us in Malta and Gozo.....but above all, dear Lord, please liberate us from the boredom of reading comments from people like Daphne, whose pathetic jibes against everything remotely Catholic are so stale!
Raymond Sammut (on 15/5/08)
The only hidden agenda is Morena's pair of boots. You have got to check them out Mr Farrugia. Tribulations? The girl is on top of the world, can't you see.
Franco Farrugia (on 15/5/08)
@ Mr R Sammut - a chip on your shoulder about something I said earlier and which you didn't like??? I wonder!
Yes, I stand by what I said earlier - in spite of what people like Sammut say: that you ask for prayers for things which are not trivial, in life. We face so many crosses and tribulations, that certain things, like an ESC, for instance, are mere trivialities. Unlike Mr Sammut, I do not 'impose my view's on others as Mr Sammut would let us believe. Since when is it that giving one's opinion is 'imposing' on others? Oh well, there DO exist hidden agendas, even on this Times' excellent service - in the way certain readers reply to others.

Good luck Morena! You are a winner already...go and enjoy yourself..sing your heart out...dance your dance...we will watch out for you..try and get you votes...you don't have to come first..just enjoy...we love you for representing us Maltese..and Gozitans. But how can you be so presumptions and bumptious as to assume that you know why Morena wanted prayers? Before you get even hotter under the collar, I suggest you watch this:

Mr. Joseph Zammit i agree 100% with you. at lest this is a very interesting argument that is not on Politics!!! so... DCG you always have to critisise everything as you think you're so a perfect!! if you don't like Morena or the Esc just don't comment!

Good Luck Dear Morena!!! I'm sure you will do your utmost in Belgrade and will make us proud! God Bless you!
George S Darmanin (on 14/5/08)
Hi Daphne,

I sort of expected such a comment, though was surprised that it had to be you.
I agree that I can be pathetic to some people, or most if it does matter. However I definitely believe that the good Lord loves all of us as we are, even you the gifted writer and me the pathetic writer. Occasionally I try to be of an instrument to Him.

Anyway I think I did my bit, after all - "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?" ROMANS 8:31

By the way I just included you in my prayers...along Morena:-) May God bless you both.
Joe Galea (on 14/5/08)
Good Luck Morena!!!

I hope your song makers and writers have fixed up the problem that the lyrics are not understandable in the song as the music overwhelms the singer's voice.

Is it possible that we don't have any up to standard Maltese dancers?

Well said Charles Demicoli.

Maria Dolores Fenech (on 14/5/08)
@ABC
hush...... the secret is how she kept slim..... are you interested?
Marco Spiteri (on 14/5/08)
Good luck Morena...Make up proud...hope you have a good performance and a better result...yes, have faith in God.....pray to God and thank him for the talents he gave you.. he is almighty.

Daphne please stop being pathatic.......you bore us with your politics ......please stay away from religion........or if you are so interested in religion i suggest you consider joining "tal-klawsura".

Mr F. Farrugia is on record of calling concerned readers "hypocrites" who ask for "nuns' blood" (I take the risk to assume that this is the same contributor). Now he imposes his view of the meaning and purpose of "prayer" which is clearly antiquated. A good dictionary would give the meaning of prayer as "a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship". Morena is a Catholic girl with good upbringing, so we need not worry about the "object of worship" possibility. Morena is one of God's children, for only through God her beautiful talent can be possible. What is trivial to you, Mr F. Farrugia, is not necessarily trivial to others. Morena will be presenting herself in front of millions of people to perform an artistic piece which I am dead sure none of us can hope to see in our dreams. Besides the artistry, and all the other skills and work that go with it, Morena and her accompaniment will be representing our country on the world stage, which is by no means a small feat. Being so gifted, it is ironic that it is Morena who asks for prayer, when it is the like of Mr F. Farrugia who need all the prayer they can get.

I think Morena has a good chance. From what I have seen, there are three formidable entries, namely, Albania, Armenia, and Serbia. Morena will find it tough competing at this level. The UK also have a good entry -- a singer who is a smooth performer and with a tremendously good beat. But our young Morena should be at least among the top ten.
Andrew Borg-Cardona (on 14/5/08)
@Maria Dolores Fenech - what do you know about Ms Losco that we don't? Why is she "a former young woman"? What is she now?
Jimmy John M Vella (on 13/5/08)
LOL at everyone who has something to say about the fact Morena asked for prayers! It's the sweetest thing! The girl clearly has faith!

I ask for prayers for a lot of different things...I ask for God's help to see me through the day, to get me to my destination while driving, to help me in an exam...but even to give me the strength and courage to get out of bed! I pray to God to help neglected and abused children...NO limit for praying to God once you have FAITH...

PS: MORENA ROCKS! You're the best qalbi! Many supportive kisses! - PS: When you're watching Xarabank next FRI, I'm the one in the front row, taking pics!!! (my moment of glory thanks to Morena!)
Max Farrugia (on 13/5/08)
If there is someone who should never call people pathetic is Daphane Caruana Galizia. Everyone has the right to comment what he wants. Please do not try to influence people's believes.
M. Farrugia
Shawn Grech (on 13/5/08)
A little word Mr Farriugia, if you lost your job would you pray to find another one? If you have a career don't you pray for success? If you were to do a demostration at work that would put your reputation, and your future at stake, would you not pray God for guidence? If God is the centre of your life, you should always seek guidence and help. Why not pray for Morena so she can do a good performance, for God to be with her for those crucial 3.5 minutes, not for her to bring Malta first ( that would be a far shot, i doubt the almighty Lord would permit it, who knows:) ) but to do us honour as a people united in music.
I don't like your song Morena but i pray for your success. Good luck.
Joseph Zammit (on 13/5/08)
@ DCG

Pathetic? On the contrary, I found this discussion (about the place of prayer in a believer's life) quite interesting.

It made a pleasant change from the usual diatribe about politics, elections, etc, - about 95 %
of the comments usually posted in these columns.
Charles DeMicoli (on 13/5/08)
A young lady with a Spanish nickname, singing a song about a Russian drink, in English, accompanied by Swedish dancers. What country is she representing? Oh, that's right, Malta. No matter what, Morena, I hope you win. Good Luck!
Maria Dolores Fenech (on 13/5/08)
Good Luck Morena, I hope you'll achieve the success that a former young woman like yourself had achieved (Ira Losco). Just keep that smile on your face, you have all it takes. Whatever happens we are proud of you because we know that you'll do your best!
Victor Muscat (on 13/5/08)
We should pray for those suffering. But there nothing wrong if we also pray for Morena!!! Why not?
May God be with you Morena.!!!
Daphne Caruana Galizia (on 13/5/08)
For heaven's sake, how pathetic.
George S Darmanin (on 13/5/08)
She's right to ask for prayers. Those of you who do not want to pray for her, its up to you. Praying to God is not just about illnesses and disasters.

For those of us who Believe, should be thankful to Him for every single breath even if this is achieved with pain and yes we could pray to Him for anything with good intentions. My wife and I pray with my children, for very simple things in life... a good day / night, an exam, before driving etc...We pray also for those in diffucult times, such as those in Myanmar, China and individuals with their own sorrows or illness. Not just for a possible miracle, which yes I believe that the Holy Father still showers us without us not realising, but to also to give us / them strength to go through. Of course we are not binding the good Lord with our prayers, but just wishful. Anything wrong with that?
john fenech (on 13/5/08)
Mr Farrugia, iWould it be alright in your book to wish Morena a successful participation in the festival? That will exclude supernatural help.
jeffreymagro@gmail.comMax Fattuhi (on 13/5/08)
Indeed, I'd rather 'pray' for the thousands of lives being lost in China and Burma. But, best of luck to Morena all the same. Just have fun and don't take it too seriously. No one does!
Joe Tabone-Adami (on 13/5/08)
Good luck, my dear Morena. Do your best and sing your heart out. The Eurovision song festival is meant to be entertainment and pure fun. With all due respect, the Good Lord should be invoked on far more serious issues regarding Malta!
Franco Farrugia (on 13/5/08)
We ask for prayers for much more serious things than a petty Eurovision song contest! We ask for prayers when we face illness, when we face serious matters, not this!
Phooeey!
