House expresses condolences

The House of Representatives, in its first regular sitting, yesterday expressed its condolences on the passing away of Sir Anthony Mamo, the first President of Malta, on May 1.

Tonio Borg, Leader of the House, thanked and praised Sir Anthony for his long service to the country, not only as President, but also as Chief Justice and lecturer in criminal law.

Alfred Sant, leader of the opposition, said he was impressed by Sir Anthony's intelligence and the way he worked with the people. He also praised him for his exemplary public service and his humanity. Dr Sant expressed his regret that he could not be present for the state funeral.

The House also expressed condolences following the demise of former Nationalist MP Carm Lino Spiteri, who passed away a few weeks ago, after the House was dissolved for the March 8 general election.

The Speaker, Louis Galea, associated himself with the condolences expressed by both sides of the House.
