Falzon promises to cooperate to safeguard industry

Labour leadership candidate Michael Falzon pledged today to fully cooperate to safeguard industry, like ST Microelectronics, amid fears that this would close its Malta plant.

Politicians, he said during a visit to the open market in Vittoriosa, needed to do their utmost to safeguard the livelihood of workers and their families. ST, he pointed out, had particular importance for the local economy, especially since it was responsible for a good percentage of the country’s exports and was one of the biggest employers.

He said the authorities, unions and employers needed to work together rather than act as competitors.

Dr Falzon said people who spoke to him at the market voiced their concern about the cost of living and market hawkers complained about lack of sales.
