Baker threatens policemen with syringe

A 31-year-old baker from St Paul's Bay yesterday admitted to trying to seriously injure two policemen with a syringe at the Mosta police station.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna heard Jean Paul Mamo plead guilty to having tried to seriously injure Police Constables Alan Joseph Abela and Samuel Camilleri on Sunday afternoon.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting and threatening the policemen, disobeying police orders and breaching the public order. The prosecution and defence teams both agreed that a suspended jail term would be the correct punishment.

Before handing down judgment, Magistrate Apap Bologna took into consideration Mr Mamo's apology to the policemen and his desire to start a drug rehabilitation programme to help him kick the habit.

The court subsequently gave Mr Mamo a six-month jail term suspended for two years.

Police Inspectors Robert Vella and Edmond Cuschieri prosecuted.

Lawyer Arthur Azzopardi was defence counsel.
