World number three Novak Djokovic came back from a set down to beat unseeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6 6-3 6-3 and claim the Rome Masters title yesterday. Wawrinka took the first set after breaking Djokovic in the fifth game. The Serb hung in during a spell on the back foot and pulled himself back into contention with a break in the middle of the second set. He then took Wawrinka's serve again at the start and end of the final set to bag his 10th ATP title and his fourth Masters Series crown. In the German Open women's final, Dinara Safina of Russia bounced back from a set down to obtain a 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory over compatriot Elena Dementieva.

Denis Nizhegorodov set a new world record in the 50km walk by clocking three hours, 34 minutes and 14 seconds at the World Race Walking Cup yesterday. The 27-year-old Russian bettered the time of 3:35.47 set by Australian Nathan Deakes on December 2, 2006 in Geelong, Australia.
